The USS Enterprise was an American aircraft carrier from World War II. Its name means "enterprising", "darts" and "full of energy". It was the seventh ship to bear this honorable name in the US Navy. It was commonly called the "Big E". It served very actively in the Pacific throughout the war with Japan. It was honored with as many as 20 stars for combat actions.

The USS Enterprise was commissioned in May 1938. It was equipped with 8 127 mm dual-purpose guns. During the war, new, more effective small-caliber anti-aircraft guns and large-caliber machine guns were constantly replaced and added. The aircraft carrier was also equipped with the most modern air surveillance radars, a radio altimeter and rangefinders. The USS Enterprise took with it, depending on the period, 70 - 91 aircraft. These were fighters, dive bombers and torpedo planes.

Official statistics confirm the downing of as many as 911 enemy aircraft by aircraft and deck artillery. Her dive bombers and torpedo planes contributed to the sinking of 71 enemy ships and vessels and damaged another 192. In the initial phase of the war, USS Enterprise operated in the Pearl Harbor area. She covered the aircraft carrier Hornet during the first raid on Tokyo (Doolittle Raid). As a flagship, she took part in the Battle of Midway, in which aircraft from American aircraft carriers led to the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers. During the fighting in the Solomon Islands, she was seriously damaged. After repairs in Pearl Harbor, she returned to warfare, supporting landing operations and taking part in bombing Japanese targets. She took part in the great battle of the Philippine Sea. The task force with Enterprise contributed to the sinking of the super battleship Musashi. On February 10, 1945, Enterprise supported the landing and fighting on Iwo Jima. The end of the war found Enterprise at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, where it was undergoing repairs following one of its suicide kamikaze attacks.
